Minimizing Our Environmental Footprint
Solar Rig
Two giant 450-watt solar panels top up our batteries using the power of the Tropical sun, giving us 4 kilo-watt hours of energy every day.
Sail Power
Our 56’ home is blown around the globe using 1,418.00 ft² / 131.74 m² of sail power, in an in-mast furling Mainsail, 130% Genoa & Staysail. We only use the engine to guide us in and out of anchorages or to meet a deadline when there is no wind at all.
Opening Deck Saloon Windows
Oyster yachts are still the only monohull sailing boats in the world to feature deck saloon windows (not deck-mounted horizontal hatches, i.e. large vertical windows) that open, to catch the wind while at anchor and let it funnel through the whole boat. So although we have three powerful air conditioning units, we rarely need to use them.
An Open Cockpit
Our Cockpit is open on all sides, with a large central window in the spray hood/dodger that funnels the breeze straight across the bow, over the saloon, and into cockpit where you will spend most of your time onboard. Unlike a catamaran, where the main cockpit is situated behind the saloon, on the same level, therefore blocking the breeze from the bow.
Ecologic Cleaning Products
When we are keeping the boat clean for you, the residue of the cleaning products is usually washed into the sea. So we only use ecologic natural cleaning products such as – White vinegar, Bicarbonate of soda, Citric acid, Simple Green, Bamboo Cleaning Cloths, Castile olive oil soap and a silver technology Eco Egg for laundry.
Clean Water Tanks
As we keep our 1000-litre water tank clean, we can drink our desalinated filtered water straight from the tank with no need for bottled water. Our fresh water is supplemented by a Soda Stream machine for those who prefer sparkling water. We also supply personal thermal water bottles to keep your water cool while on passage or out and about.
Large Capacity Black-water Tanks
Our two large black water holding tanks ensure that our sewage is not released while we are in proximity to land.
Reef-friendly Sunscreen
We provide you with only reef friendly sunscreen with high SPF to keep you sun safe. We also provide cloth and straw hats for your use while on board and recommend that you bring your own rash/sun vest, for swimming and snorkelling.
Sunshade
Our capacious cockpit, where you will spend most of your waking hours while on board, has a large semi-permanent Bimini structure overhead, with detachable sunshades to keep you sun safe all day.
